The Uni
Aside from the video of my humble abode you guys haven't really seen the rest of my campus and how pretty it is. I've got a lot of pictures and a lot of things to post about, so I think I'm going to keep this one limited to university (just called a Uni here. Fancy, eh?) pics and related comments. First, here's the map of my campus.
As you can see, the red arrow is pointing to where I live. It takes me about 8-10 minutes to walk to my classes which are in the Cotrell building. On my way there I walk over the Airthrey Loch on the pedestrian bridge, which allows for some nice views.
In addition to the lake, (which has mostly mallards as well as some swans and this bird. I'm doing my homework dad!)
we've also got a converted castle on campus!! This is the Airthrey Castle which is now being used by the Legal Department. I wish Comp Sci had a castle...
Speaking of Comp Sci, I started my classes last Thursday and much to my dismay the lectures here are about as bad as the lectures at CSU. The hand out a powerpoint printout, put it up in a screen, and then read it to you. They might expand a little, but not an hours worth, and not enough to make me want to get out of bed. Luckily this week I've had a few labs, and once I'm in front of a computer they could be reading me the dictionary and I would still be happy. As it is, the labs are actually very open ended so far. They hand out some kind of worksheet with instructions on it and you follow the instructions or figure out how to deal with the problem they've given you. Not having to listen to someone drone on and actually being active in doing something is much better for me so those have been good so far.
I'm also looking into some of the clubs here. So far I've been to meetings for the Drama club and the Ultimate Frisbee club. Both sound pretty awesome, but pretty intense too. I think the frisbee team competes on a fairly large scale and the drama club is theatre, which is inherently intense. I'm hoping that I can get involved without committing myself too much in case I end up wanted to be out of town for an extended period. Tomorrow I'm going to the first Fencing meeting which should be awesome, and then I'm going to look into a Tenshinken Karate club. We'll see how those go. I imagine I'll only end up being involved in 2 or 3 on a regular basis, but it's fun to check them all out.
I think that's about it for academics and campus so I'll leave you with this lovely shot of my very first pint in my new home! It's a delicious 80 Shilling Scottish Ale. A good choice, if I may say so myself. Oh, and I'm going to be checking out the Bridge of Allan microbrewery on Friday, so I'll try to get in a good post about all the deliciousness I find there. Until then, cheers!

Thanks for the great post! It's neat to see a map and your room ,and to put that together with the video. gives me a good idea of the layout. The bird in the photo is a common coot, not to be confused with the very similar American coot. Same story as the robin, they had it first, so ours get the additional tag of "American". An 80 shilling Scottish ale - hmmm, that sounds yummy! between the birds and the beer, I think I'm going to enojoy my visit.
It'll be good to hear about the clubs and how that goes for you, and your tour of Stirling itself. It is great that you are there for so long, so you can slowly get to know the place, and not feel like you have to hurry and do it all in a week. Keep the blogs coming, I love them!
Wow, I was just checking out the website for that brewery and it sounds awesome. I was just thinking about brewing an 80/- beer, but man, that Wild Oat Stout has be drooling. And they have beers on cask! Yum!
Sorry, tho, to hear the CS classes so far aren't floating your boat. It's a tricky one to teach, but I agree there's got to be a better way than "here, look at this powerpoint while I read it to you." Ah well. Nothing a few pints won't put right! :)
